Richard Aybar is a New York–born sculptor and collectible design artist of Dominican heritage and the founder of RAWORKSHOP. His work centers on rubber, most often polyurethane — a petroleum-derived material through which he develops sculptural furniture, lighting, and vessels whose forms oscillate between utilitarian object and contemporary artifact.

While most vessels are ceramic, glass, or stone, the Double Negative is hand-cast in Aybar's signature polyurethane rubber. By utilizing a material traditionally reserved for flexible industrial components, Aybar completely reimagines the ‘vase’. Instead of a rigid, fragile object that could crack or shatter, the vessel is dense, highly tactile, slightly pliable, and possesses a completely unexpected weight and ‘give’ to the touch. By naming it the Double Negative, Aybar plays with the concept of voids, inversion, and structural absence. The vessel is designed to look like a tool or an internal component that has been pulled inside out. It features heavy, rounded, biological curves on the outside, contrasted by deep, cavernous voids that catch light through the translucent, tinted rubber.
